Sri Lanka, an island nation in the Indian Ocean, is a paradise that's hard to resist. With its stunning beaches, rich culture, delicious food, and friendly people, Sri Lanka is an ideal destination for travelers looking for adventure and relaxation. My recent visit to Sri Lanka was an unforgettable experience, and I am excited to share my journey with you.
Day 1: Arrival in Colombo
After a long flight, we arrived in Sri Lanka's capital Colombo, where we were greeted by our tour guide. We hopped on a bus and headed straight to our hotel, the Cinnamon Lakeside, located in downtown Colombo. After checking in, we indulged in some local cuisine at the hotel's restaurant, which offered a wide range of Sri Lankan dishes such as string hoppers, hoppers, curry, and kottu roti.
Day 2: City Tour of Colombo
On our second day, we started with a city tour of Colombo, visiting some of its iconic landmarks such as the Gangaramaya Temple, Independence Square, and Galle Face Green. The Gangaramaya Temple is one of the most important Buddhist temples in Sri Lanka, and it's a must-visit spot for tourists. The temple complex consists of several buildings, and we spent a good hour exploring them.
Independence Square is a popular public space that commemorates Sri Lanka's independence from British rule in 1948. The park also houses the Independence Memorial Museum, which showcases Sri Lanka's history during the colonial era.
After a busy morning, we headed to the Dutch Hospital Shopping Precinct for lunch. The food court here is a fusion of Sri Lankan, Chinese, Indian, and Western cuisines, catering to all types of visitors.
In the evening, we took a stroll at Galle Face Green, a popular waterfront park that's perfect for a relaxing evening walk or watching the sunset.
Day 3: Wadduwa Beach & Madu River Safari
On day three, we headed to Wadduwa Beach, located about an hour's drive from Colombo. The beach is famous for its white sand and turquoise waters, and we took the opportunity to swim and soak up the sun.
In the afternoon, we went on a Madu River Safari, which took us through the mangrove forests of the river. We spotted some exotic birds, monitor lizards, and crocodiles along the way. The highlight of the safari was visiting the Cinnamon Island, where we got to witness how cinnamon is harvested and processed.
Day 4: Sigiriya Rock Fortress
On day four, we traveled to Sigiriya, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that's famous for its ancient rock fortress. The fortress dates back to the 5th century AD and was built by King Kashyapa as a fortress and a palace. Climbing the steep rock was one of the most exhilarating experiences of the trip. The views from the top were breathtaking, and we saw the famous Sigiriya frescoes, which depict the beautiful women of the king's court.
After descending from the rock, we visited the Pidurangala Rock, which is famous for its panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.
Day 5: Kandy & Temple of the Tooth Relic
On day five, we took a scenic train ride to Kandy, which is located in the central highlands of Sri Lanka. Kandy is the cultural capital of Sri Lanka and is home to several historical and religious sites.
Our first stop was the Temple of the Tooth Relic, which houses the tooth relic of Lord Buddha. The temple is one of the most sacred places in Sri Lanka, and we got to witness the daily rituals and ceremonies that are performed there.
In the evening, we watched a cultural dance show that showcased Sri Lanka's traditional music, dance, and costumes.
Day 6: Visit to Nuwara Eliya
On day six, we visited Nuwara Eliya, a picturesque mountain town known for its tea plantations and scenic landscapes. We visited a tea factory and learned about the history of tea in Sri Lanka, and how it's grown, harvested, and processed.
We also visited the Hakgala Botanical Garden, which is home to a wide variety of plants and flowers, including the famous Hakgala rainforest.
Day 7: Yala National Park Safari
On day seven, we headed to Yala National Park, located in the southeast of Sri Lanka. The park is home to several mammals, such as elephants, leopards, deer, and wild buffaloes. We went on a safari ride and saw some of these animals up close.
